Looking for best water purifiers within a certain budget? Check out the following posts on our website:
Which Water Purifier is Best for You
Largely, there are three main types of water purifiers that you can install in the kitchen. These are: Gravity based non electric water purifiers, UV water purifiers, and RO water purifiers. All of these water purifiers disinfect the water but not all of them will work with all types of water. To decide which one is the best water purifier for your needs, its important that you know pros and cons of each type of water purifier.
Gravity Water Purifiers
Gravity based water purifiers rely on gravity for water purification. You have to manually pour water into the upper tank of water purifier. This could be cumbersome especially for the busy or elderly people.
Further, the gravity based water filters are suitable to purify water with TDS or total dissolved solids content less than 500 mg/liter. This means it will not be suitable to purify bore well water that is muddy or rusty in color. In several cities tap water is full of chlorine and fluorine among other salts making such water unsuitable for gravity water purifiers.
Gravity based water purifiers are good to remove bacteria, protozoa, cysts and any turbidity in water. However, it can not remove viruses, heavy metal or chemical content in your water. Some gravity water purifiers come with silver impregnated activated charcoal filter that can remove some chlorine from water.
UV Water Purifiers
Similarly, if the water you need to purify has high TDS then even the UV filters may not be able to work effectively. This is because the micro-organisms that are stuck or hidden behind suspended particles in water will escape the UV rays and will therefore not die.
However, the UV water purifier models that come with a pre-filter and a UF cartridge are good at eliminating all micro organisms from the purified water.
A UV water purifier that comes with a pre-filter and a UF filter is suitable for purifying water with TDS upto 500 mg/liter*.
The 2 main advantages of a UV purifier over gravity water purifier are:
- It is more effective at killing germs
- These water purifiers are fully automatic.
Is UV Water Purifier Good Enough?
Many people like to go for a RO water purifier, irrespective of whether they really need a RO or not. This is because they are simply following the trend and are not aware of the potential health effects of drinking de-mineralized water.
The problem with RO purifiers is that they waste too much of water, they are costly to maintain, and they can cause mineral deficiency in body if TDS level is not maintained in the purified water.
RO Water Purifiers
RO water purifiers on the other hand don’t face any of these problems and provide you with water which is as pure as distilled water. But the problem with RO water purifiers is not purification, but the un-natural character of water that is produced after multiple stages of purification process.
This problem happens where people install RO Water Purifier for purifying water that has TDS of less than 500. In such cases, the TDS in purified water reduces to less than 50 mg/liter.
Such water is un-natural and not found in nature. Not even in Himalayas. In nature, water always have some TDS in it, which includes minerals, bicarbonates, and other substances. Such water is alkaline and is best for human consumption.
To fix this problem, latest RO water purifiers come attached with an alkaline mineral cartridge, or TDS adjuster, or both. This process adds important minerals like calcium, and magnesium back into the purified water and also improves the taste of water and its PH value.
RO Ban – National Green Tribunal Vs RO companies
In the year 2019, National Green Tribunal ordered prohibiting the use of reverse osmosis (RO) purifiers where total dissolved solids (TDS) in water are below 500 mg per litre. RO manufacturers moved supreme court but the court refused to stay NGT ban. Instead it directed RO manufacturers association to approach the government for resolution. Government is currently, talking to all stake holders and will soon make a law for RO Water Purifiers.
Because RO water purifiers are not environment friendly and waste too much of water during purification process, it is therefore highly unlikely that RO Ban will be lifted until RO water purifiers become more environment friendly.
This gives us another reason to prefer a UV water purifier over a R.O. water purifier. Especially if the TDS in your water is less than 500mg/liter.
RO won’t be banned in cities/areas where TDS in water provided by water agencies (Jal Boards) is over 500mg/liter.
Bottom Line:

Best Water Purifier in India – Frequently Asked Questions
How do I choose a good water purifier?
The very first step required to choose a good water purifier is to test the TDS in water at your home/office. If the TDS is less than 500 mg/liter, then go for a UV water purifier or gravity water purifier based on your budget.
If TDS in water is above 500 mg/liter, then go for a RO water purifier with TDS adjuster from a good brand like Eureka Forbes, Kent, Livpure, Faber, or others.
Is boiled water better than RO water?
Boiled water provided 100% protection from diseases caused due to water borne micro organisms like bacteria, virus, etc. However, it does not get rid of TDS in water. So, if there are chemicals in the water due to industry and pesticide pollution, then they continue to be present in boiled water.
Again, if the source water does not have high TDS or chemical pollutants, then boiled water is absolutely safe. However, if the souce water is contaminated with industry chemicals and has high TDS, then RO water is better than boiled water.
Does boiling water remove TDS?
Boiling water does not reduce TDS. It only kills the micro organisms present in source water.
What is best TDS for drinking water?
As per WHO, a TDS level less than 300 mg/litre is considered as excellent. For RO purified water, a TDS of 75-150 is considered best for drinking.
Why is RO banned?
RO water is banned in several countries. In India also, the government is considering banning RO water in areas where the source water has TDS less than 500 mg/liter. There are two main reasons behind it. First, RO water purifiers waste too much of water. Second, RO purification of water with TDS less than 500 mg/litre often results in output water with too low TDS level, that is acidic in nature and harmful for health.
Which type of water purifier is best water for India?
We asked this question to a water treatment technician and here is what he said:
“As a father and a water purification technician, I often recommend UV water purifiers over RO water purifiers. UV water purifiers are an excellent way to meet our families needs for water purification. When used in conjunction with a pre-filter and post-filtration, UV light is an excellent method to purify tap water at home. Most importantly, it retains the natural PH, alkalinity and minerals in the water; making it the safest purifier water to drink.”
However, if the input water at your home or office is hard or has high level of dissolved solids (TDS), then you must use a Reverse Osmosis based water purifier.
Conclusion
We have listed best water purifier in India from different categories and we hope you will find one for yourself easily now. If you are still undecided and looking for a recommendation, then we would recommend Kent Ultra Storage 7 Ltr, UV and UF Water Purifier . If you need a RO, then buy Kent - 11076 New Grand 8-Litres Wall-Mountable RO + UV+ UF + TDS (White) 20 litre/hr Water Purifier

One of the best and clear comparison.
Very genuine information! Its great to see much needed details at a single place for selecting branded water purifiers. Taking decisions to purchase a water purifier has become very easier.
Thank you for such a detailed information. Keep up your good work.
Fantastic comparison. This helped me in deciding which water purifier to buy. Thanks for the research and efforts put in for this article. Great going..Good Luck.
Thanks for the article and it was really insightful.
Good comparison of water purifiers required for us. Need a clarification or advice in my case. I was using Kent Maxx UV+ UF water purifier in our old apartment where government water was supplied. We moved to a new apartment and here the watchman is pumping bore water mixed with water supplied by local authorities. I had called a water purifier technician from UrbanCompany and he was saying that TDS is 400 and I have to use RO and it is not good to use just an UV purifier and it will cause health concerns (UF filter was disconnected as it was always getting jammed). As the taste water is not good and TDS is around 400 and with above background, what do you suggest?
Yes, you should buy a RO water purifier for borewell water especially when the taste is not good.
Thanks Lavanay for your suggestion. Trying to re-confirm as the writer said above that for TDS upto 500 UV+UF filters are good enough and the technician suggesting that for TDS of 400, we have to go for RO. I was aware earlier that just UV+UF water purifiers do not enhance the taste of water and do not reduce the TDS of water which in turn enhance the taste of water.
My doubt is whether the technician was correct as he later handed over his personal visiting card where he sells RO water purifiers.
Hi Rajesh,
Yes, a UV + UF water filter is good enough for purifying water with TDS upto 500 mg/liter. However, it won’t reduce the TDS in the water. So, if the input water tastes bad in your area, then it would be a good idea to get a RO water purifier with Mineralizer and TDS adjuster. Most RO companies in India and their technecians advise people to go for RO water purifier if TDS of input water is over 200 mg/litre. So, no wonder the technician asked you to buy a RO water purifier.
However, As per WHO, a TDS level less than 300 mg/litre is considered as excellent.
And NGT has asked for Ban on RO water purifiers in areas where TDS is less than 500 mg/litre mainly because it wastes too much water.
Finally, you have to take the decision yourself. Check the TDS of input water, taste it, and then decide.
Thanks Lavanay for the clarification. So, what I can conclude from your post is though WHO recommends TDS of 300 as excellent or Govt plans of banning RO for TDS below 500, if taste of water is not good we have to buy RO with TDS controller and added minerals. Correct?
Yes, if taste of water is not good, we have to buy RO with TDS controller and added minerals.
Hi Lavanay, I have been searching for a RO water purifier with TDS controller and added minerals but could not zero down on any model from major brands which has both. I see that with TDS controller it just adds some input water to enhance the TDS and so they say it is retaining essentials minerals… this way all RO water is not going through full purification right? There are some models which are having mineral cartridge where TDS cannot be controlled and so might not be good for health. Any comments?
Hi Rajesh,
Yes, you are very much right in your understanding. We recommend purchasing the RO water purifier with TDS controller as it has several advantages like, It gives you flexibility to pass 100% water through RO membrane or completely avoid it, or adjust it to a certain percentage. When you allow some water to avoid RO membrane, it not only adds TDS to output water but also reduces the amount of water that RO water purifier wastes in the process of water purification.
Very useful info. Thanks a ton for your efforts.
Hi, could you please suggest me good water purifier…TDS level of the municipal water is below 100 and I am currently using Hindustan Unilever PureIt. Do I need to continue with the same since TDS level is much below or do you suggest and water purifier?
If the TDS of input water is just 100 mg/litre, then you don’t need a RO water purifier. Simply buy a UV/UF water purifier like the ones we have suggested in this article under UV water purifiers.
im from kathmandu. tds of underground water is 380 and taste of water is good. which water purifier should i buy? plz suggest.
If TDS is just 380,and the water tastes good, then why do you want to install a water purifier. Drink natural water.
If you still want to purchase a water purifier, then buy any UV water purifier.
Hi is it safe to use RO plus UV plus UF water filter with Copper ions. Can we drink water with copper ions for full day for years. If yes which water filter is best .
Yes, its safe to dring water with copper ions. You can consider purchasing this Faber RO with copper guard: https://amzn.to/2Dk3quK
Dear Sir, In our residential area, TDS level of water is 120. Which water purifier would you recommend? If we install RO water purifier, does this effect to our water quality. I read somewhere that it will decrease the sodium level of the water which is bad for health. Kindly guide
RO water purifier is not recommended in your case. Buy any of the UV water purifiers we have listed above.
Hi sir. We have borewell at home. Which is the best purifier to but
This Kent RO water will be a good choice for you: https://amzn.to/2Pq6AAa
Thanks for the very useful information on the water purifier.. it has helped a lot to understand and decided what to buy.. kudos
I have water supply from municipal corporation in my house with TDS level of 285. I am planning to buy a new water purifier. Kindly guide should i go for
RO (Havells Digiplus Alkaline or Kent Grand Plus) or UV water purifier?
Because TDS of source water is under 300ppm. I will advise you to purchase a UV water purifier. But if you want to purchase a RO, then Kent Grand Plus is a better choice as it gives you ability to adjust TDS in output water as per your liking.
Hello sir
I stay in apartment. When I tested water with tds meter I got reading about 420 to 450. Eureka Forbes executive cane and tested reading was above 500. They suggested to buy Dr aquaguard active copper HD RO or RO+UV+MTDS
What is your opinion sir? Kindly guide
At TDS 450 to 500 mg/litre, you can go with a RO water purifier with TDS controller. So, in my opinion Aquaguard RO+UV+MTDS is a better option as then you can adjust the TDS in output water to about 100-120. Which would be ideal.
How to differentiate between Aquaguard Aquasure Delight with Dr. Aquaguard EnRich RO+UV+MTDS both similar functionality from Eureka Forbes. I am told Dr. Aquaguard is directly and exclusively sold by Eureka Forbes whereas Aquasure and Aquabrand models are sold by retailers too. So, any advantage to go with Dr. Aquaguard models directly from Eureka Forbes. There is cost advantage from buying from retailers than buying directly for Aquaguard and Aquasure models.
It has same purification stages. The only difference seems to be design, and asthetics. Yes, its true that Eureks Forbes uses different branding for water purifiers they sell online and the models available in stores are different. No matter, which model you purchase, it will be backed by same quality of service by Eureka Forbes. Yes, purchasing online is cheaper as there are less number of middle men.
Hi Mam,
My borewell water TDS is around 2400. Can i use Kent Pearl? It says TDS supported up to 2000. I know that Faber supports upto 2500 TDS, but i am inclined to use Kent and ready for extra maintainance incase the filters go once in 3 months. Please suggest!!
Yes, you can purchase Kent Pearl. However, please note that it is possible that the company may not replace filters if problem arises even during the warranty period.
Thanks for the article, it gave me good insight about choosing water purifier. I have a question, will require your suggestion & advice. At my home TDS 250 with source of water mix of bore water & river water. In comparison on the water purifier that is recommended by the executive who visited my house for Eureka Forbes Dr.Aquaguard Nrich HD RO+UV+MTDS water purifier with zero pressure pump compared with Kent Grand Star RO+UV+UF+TDS Control+UV disinfection in storage tank, both the products are priced around 21K, which product is good to purchase or Do you suggest any better model? Sorry i cannot copy the link of the products here as it is not allowing for copy in the comments section. Appreciate your reply!
Hi Krishna, TDS of 250 is kind of ok. I would recommend a UV+UF water purifier like Kent Maxx. If you are inclined to buy a RO water purifier, then you can purchase either of the two water purifiers you named.
Thanks Lavanay for the clarification. I live in an apartment last year TDS is 180 & when I checked it during this week TDS is 250. This change in TDS levels within short span made me think to choose RO for future needs which will suffice taste of water & any relocation of place. Please correct me if my understanding is wrong? In your article you suggested to purchase Kent Grand but Kent executive mentioned to go with top end model, which i am not sure whether they are correct. I am unable to figure it out which model to purchase, will require your expert guidance. Please reply on the below 2 questions. 1) In comparison Eureka Forbes Dr.Aquaguard Nrich HD RO+UV+MTDS water purifier with zero pressure pump (I dont see UF mentioned in this model) compared with Kent Grand Star RO+UV+UF+TDS Control + UV disinfection in storage tank, which model is best choice in Features & Performance? 2) In terms of minimal maintenance like Filter cost, AMC, Warranty, after sales support and less water wastage that has RO + UV + UF + TDS controller , Which Water Purifier Company should I give priority for the purchase?
Its natural for a company’s executive to suggest the top brand. If you can afford it, it would certainly be better than lower priced RO purifiers of same company.
Coming to the two choices – I think Kent Grand Star RO has better features. But Aquaguard Nrich has better, modern design and it is also low on maintenance cost. Service quality, warranty, water wastage is almost the same for both the models.
Disclaimer: We haven’t tested these two models. What ever I have written above is based on the information I could find online.
I agree with you Lavanay, how sales people drive us to purchase top brand to get their margins & profit. What is the recommended TDS by WHO & Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) that we have to set at the RO water purifier to ensure minerals, PH value is maintained? While comparing the models I could notice Aquaguard Nrich didn’t mention about UF in their model but not sure whether I get it correctly. I know you didn’t test these models but based on your experience which model would you choose in between Eureka Forbes Dr.Aquaguard Nrich HD RO+UV+MTDS water purifier with zero pressure pump or Kent Grand Star RO+UV+UF+TDS Control+UV disinfection in storage tank?
Aquaguard Nrich does not have a UF cartridge. If I have to choose between these two models, I’ll go with Kent Grand Star.
There is no exact number recommended by WHO or BIS regarding the TDS in drinking water. WHO rates water with TDS under 300 as excellent.
Lavanay, Thanka a lot 🙂 As suggested I will go ahead with the purchase of Kent Grand Star that is good in features & performance over Dr.Aquaguard Nrich. I got it about TDS recommendation, I will prefer to set it between 100 – 150.
Dear lavanay
I am using Kent grand ( ro +uv+ uf +TDS controller) and tds is around 400 to 500 more. Actually I hve problem of stomach so someone say that ro reduce all useful mineral too from water and advised me use ro with mineral cartridge than aquaguard guy suggest me reviva ro+uv+mtds with copper and aosmith guy suggest proplanet 4 so I am confused to buy which one and please suggest which one I buy or old Kent is good
I think old water purifier would be good enough. Get it serviced if you are suspicious. Also see a doctor for problems with your stomach.
Is plastic of purifier toxic
As per current scientific research, as long as your purifier is using food grade plastic, it is not toxic. If you are not convinced, then you can purchase a RO with stainless steel water tank. Like this one here https://amzn.to/344aqH1
Very informative article. Realty comparison for first time buyers.
TDS keeps on fluctuating in a range of 70 to 750…currently it is 750. Want to buy Z9 of AO smith…but there is no tds controller in it.
Pls suggest.
This is weird situation. Even if you purchase a water purifier with TDS controller, you can not adjust it every day or every month. Only a technician can adjust TDS controller. Take decision based on what is the TDS level most of the time in a year.
Hi Lavanay
Great article and glad to see individual responses from you.
I live in a community in Hyderabad and water is sourced mainly from municipality (Godavari or Manjeera pipeline water), and for some months especially in summer it’s mixed with bore well and tanker water too.
The TDS ranges between 240 to 340 on different days. Do you recommend a RO filter or UV+UF is fine?
Most of the purifiers say that UF only works if TDS is less than 200ppm. Is that correct?
I have been using Kent Pearl RO for last 4 years, but it breaks down to often, so looking for a change and thinking if I need RO or not.
Which water purifier do you recommend?
Hi Raghu. Yes a UV+UF filter would work the best in your case. We have recommended Kent ultrastorage UF UV purifier but if your experince with Kent is not good, then you can purchase AO Smith X2. Just make sure that you have AO smith’s service center in your city before making the purchase.
Any reviews on LG Puricare range? I am
Told they come with stainless steel, and don’t require servicing every year.
All service personnel keep telling me, RO is must, and output TDS of 60 is good enough. Any comments?
Yes, LG and havells have a few models that come with a stainless steel water tank. However, all RO water purifiers need servicing every year. If someone tells you that some model does not need to be serviced, then he is lying. The water purifier industry including the technicians promote RO water purifiers as they are costly and they make them more money. They recommend RO if input water has TDS over 200 ppm and they set the TDS of output water to 50 to 60 ppm. On the other hand NGT, which is a government agency, recommends RO only for water with TDS higher that 500 ppm. Which means they consider TDS of 500 as safe. Now its upto you to decide the TDS in your water.
I have purchased a Havells Water Purifier Max through a store which is specific to purifying borewell water.
Is it a good buy ? Kindly provide your feedback
Haven’t tested it but the product looks promising.
Hi I am thinking to buy water purifier only for tap water so after I red ur review decided to buy eureka forbe aquaguard uv plus
But now one of my friend suggested that copper based new launched is best but I searched for the reviews but couldn’t find so please help me through this , which one is good?? It’s very helpful if u replied
Thanks before
Havells max or Havells delite which is the best
Both are good. But I like havells delite for its looks.
Very good information and conclusion
Very good article. We get municipality water in our community, and current TDS value ranges under 200. However, during summer we may need to go for Tanker water. Considering this, is there any RO+UV+UF purifier with MTDS controller with an option to bypass RO most of the year, and engage RO only during Summer?
Also, any suggestions between kent Ultra UV+UF Vs. Kent Maxx UV+UF, and any other UV+UF options, preferably with no tank or with an option to bypass storage tank.
very informative thanks lot
